Windows to the soul

by Ronan

When considering different forms of prayer we must ask ourselves should we learn to communicate in a different way for prayer to work? The answer in my opinion is a resounding ‘YES’. To pray is to allow your soul to communicate rather than your body and so ways of opening such a dialogue are needed….

In prayer we place ourselves before God in thanks and in love. God is love and so we sense God in emotion more than we see God in tangible objects and so words. How then should we talk to God. With words?…..of course! But prayer can be so much more than mere words and so we acknowledge the use of our souls instead of just our vocal cords.

You’ve heard it said that the eyes are the windows to the soul and this wisdom should be recognised as such. The practice of prayer before the blessed sacrament has always been a part of our faith but what of personal prayer?…that’s really what I want to write about here. Icons. Many find that sitting before an icon or religious painting can help you focus for prayer. But they don’t have to be religious pictures in the strictest sense. Any pictures which speak to you of God could help.

In my opinion our souls have a language which we may not recognise as such…..music. When you hear beautiful music does it not strike a cord deep within you that words never do? Such music can really help…I think so anyway. Even without singing aloud, if you listen to such music and somewhere inside you you’re singing then you’re praying with your soul.

Just an opinion but I think these windows really help when the door’s locked.
