Is it our fault it rains?

by Mike

Well it is that fun time of year again, where we bemoan the amount of rain and wish we were in sunnier climates with our friends. This is summertime right?

For 350,000 homeowners in Gloucestershire; the rain is something they could do without at this present time. The flooding in that part of Britain seems to be providing a non stop onslaught and it’s easy to understand why some think they are under siege. The frightening thing behind all of this that it’s nature and not a terrorist threat that is causing all of this.

Add to that the lack of running water, a problem which may take two weeks to resolve, and you start to ask yourself is there really something that we can do about climate change?

The global climate models indicate a future for the UK with drier summers and wetter winters, but storm events in the summer are predicted to be more frequent and more intense. So it may well be the case that we will have to learn to live with more flooding.

David Butler of the University of Exeter

There are many things we can do to help the environment but while that ground work can be useful there are other factors that are causing negative increases resulting in many cases like the one currently facing Britain.

The U.N.’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has estimated temperatures will rise 3.2 to 7.3 degrees Fahrenheit (1.8 to 4.0 degrees Celsius) by the year 2100. The panel believe that this will lead to more worldwide hunger problems, extinctions of many animals and water shortages. One of the main contributors, they say, for this is the constant burning of fossil. Therefore it seem to be our fault for the situation we are in.

However some of these findings are said to be flawed. Many studies taken, from weather stations, that are closer to towns and cities have failed to take into account that heat generated from the growth of those areas

These small global temperature increases of the last 25 years and over the last century are likely natural changes that the globe has seen many times in the past.

Professor William M Gray of Colorado State University

Professor Gray also states that between the Mid 1940’s and early 1970’s that a global cooling took place and all the greenhouse gas releases created by mankind should decrease the level of atmospheric water vapour and not increase it.

It’s hard to convince people to get behind a cause that requires huge attention because most of us do not have the time for it. If it is not help the poor and starving, it is save the environment and if not either of those then it becomes save endangered species.

Yes all three of these causes are something which can all do better with. However, while change can start with one person, just having the numbers doesn’t necessarily mean there will be the organization that is needed to go along with the right intentions. If that were the case World Leaders would be in a position to complete the tasks we’ve elected them for.
