To err is human…
So…the news on the world’s lips these days is that Tony Blair is to convert to Catholicism. I suppose an hour long meeting with Pope Benedict can do that! Now I can see why this is good news but what shocks me is the fact that no paper has resurrected Tony Blair’s recent fallouts with Rome. Have we all, in our jump to reclaim a lost lamb, forgotten Blair’s enthusiasm concerning Bush’s ‘war on ‘terror” and his refusal to acknowledge the warning cries from the city state.
I’m not suggesting that these acts should hang over Blair’s head forever more….or that his application form should be proclaimed null and void due to a failure to submit. What I am suggesting though is that we remember that Blair is a politician. It is well known that ‘it’s easier to ask for forgiveness than to seek permission’ and any man who doesn’t know this has no right to call himself a politician…. The timing is a little too perfect for my liking. The decisions have been made after all. I suppose he did start recalling troops from Iraq and I acknowledge that a man’s personal life is just that. I don’t know what I’m really worried about but it does seem strange to recognise this man as human after all that time complaining about his (& Bush’s) plans for World domination.
This leads me on to something entirely separate. In our agitation with those who’s opinions we find less than palatable how often do we recognise their humanity. To err is human after all. I never have and don’t intend to sit by the big red button waiting for a reason but what if I was in that position. I really don’t know what I’d do. We would all like to think that we would work differently and when it comes to GW we’d probably be right. The point though is that no man, woman or child ever does something that they truly think is wrong. No person lives in a way which they consider evil. I have no doubt that such warmongerers as Hitler or Stalin thought that what they did was for the greater good…..Scary really but that’s it!
Where then, if at all, does the concept of universals enter the equation. In my opinion universals are not only necessary in the running of our world but are also valid realities. Good is good and bad is bad. That’s that! It doesn’t just depend on the situation. Pride is good but if it means the harm of others then it looses that title. It’s not that hard really and if we find that difficult then we have a code that explains it - the Ten Commandments. (He prepared it all, didn’t He!) Theft, murder, disrespect for our fellow man and for our Creator…all these things are straightforward guidelines for lives evils.
Anyway I was talking about Blair wasn’t I…..Oh yeah…to forgive, Divine.
