We all have an opinion
A recent study has shown that 90% of people in America believe in God and 38% are “committed Christians.”I’m in no doubt that these results will give religion a major boost after recent scandals but you also have to take into account that in order for a survey to be valid; a minimum of a thousand people are needed. That’s not that results do not reflect on the rest of America, but we always seem to take these far more seriously then we need to.
We react to these surveys much like we do to critics in the media; we take them as the ultimate truth. Whereas we sometimes fail to see that a critic is a human being and has an opinion like we all do,
We all should be entitled to our opinion and not punished for it. Many of my friends think differently to the way I do on certain issues. I don’t find fault with them, I more enjoy debating the merits of their argument; so long as they can back up their claim.
The old society of innocent until proven guilty is slowly fading away. I think it’s more a case of being accused of something is just as bad as being guilty of doing/being something.
We seem to have a need to label people, without really knowing them, and because of this we get it into our heads that how a person is portrayed in the media is exactly how they are. This is not always the case. There’s also plenty of cheap shots being taken; simply to gain publicity.
Tom Cruise is usually in the news for a variety of reasons, but this week seemed to be for a more unusual one than most other times. The German Protestant Church has spoken out against the actor and his religious beliefs.
Cruise is a Scientologist which Thomas Gandow, the Church’s chief spokesman on religious cults, called a “totalitarian organisation” He also went on to label Cruise “the Goebbels of Scientology”.
These comments are centred around the proposed shooting of a new film in which Cruise is playing World War II hero Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg - who led an unsuccessful plot to assassinate Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler.
My first thought, when reading this, was why should German Protestant Church feel so strongly about this? As far as I’m aware, I have never read or heard of Tom Cruise preaching his beliefs as the only way of life. While I don’t agree with the beliefs I wouldn’t go out of my way to look down upon them and also find similarities to a fascist regime from over sixty years ago.
When did preaching become a childish game of ‘My religion is better than yours’? Or is this just a case of an old church movement trying to thrust itself into modern times?
