In dying we’re born
The eyes of politicized Catholics everywhere are now squarely pointed at the Australian Church after the retired auxiliary bishop of Sydney (Geoffrey Robinson) released his new book: ‘Confronting Power & Sex in the Catholic Church: reclaiming the spirit of Jesus’. Amongst other things Bishop Robinson’s book includes a scathing attack on the Church’s handling of the clerical sex-abuse scandals.
Something to note is that these are not the ramblings of a ‘wishy-washy liberal’ or an elderly anti-papist. It was Bishop Robinson who co-ordinated the Church’s national response to the scandals in 90’s Australia. This new edition to ‘Index Librorum Prohibitorum’ stresses how he and many of his associates would see the Church move forward in a way that would secure it’s survival ‘on the ground’.
It suggests that the best option would have been to make the issue public once the trend was recognised and sacrafice the name of an institution in peoples minds for the faith of many and the name of the institution in peoples hearts. In the words of St. Francis of Assisi: “it is in giving that we receive, in pardoning that we are pardoned and in dying that we are born to eternal life.”
