Standing up to a bully

by Mike

Finally it has happened. Finally someone has taken a reasonable stand against a so called “Leader” of a country who deprives his citizens of the basics needed to live and work properly.

Ok, I realize that refusing to attend a summit if, Zimbabwe’s President, Robert Mugabe attends might smack as a small gesture but at least Gordon Brown would like the world to see that he will not make a bedfellow of a government reign that is free to do whatever they like whenever they like at the cost of abject poverty.

I only wish more would follow suit. If 83 year-old men can be considered dangerous to the public then Mugabe is at the top of that list. It just seems amazing to me that someone that live the “high life”, as far as the outside world can see, with the finest suits and never go hungry or without pretty much anything and all the while his fellow countrymen struggle daily to get by with extortionate rates of inflation where trading has dwindled to nothing.

President Mugabe is the only African leader to face an EU travel ban. There is a reason for this — the abuse of his own people…There is no freedom in Zimbabwe; no freedom of association; no freedom of the press. And there is widespread torture and mass intimidation of the political opposition.

Gordon Brown, Prime Minister of Britain

The problems in Zimbabwe seemed to have been swept under the carpet by a Western Society that generally thinks nothing of flexing its muscles to sort out conflicts in many countries. Red tape will always bring about its own problems. The other African countries leave them alone and Mugabe has the run of Zimbabwe to blame everyone else, such as the EU, Britain and the US, for the predicament the country finds itself in.

Mugabe is seeking a 7th term as President, so maybe he loves the power and prestige he receives from the role. He will find a way to remain in power, because whoever challenges him will have to overcome many obstacles, with staying alive possibly being one of them.

There are many different forms of evil in this world and not everyone can be stopped, but that doesn’t someone cannot try.
