On The Lighter Side

by Mike

Ok it’s that time of the year again…yes you’ve guessed correctly it’s the 21st September. With that in mind, and since it’s a Friday, I thought I’d take things to the lighter side again.

Firstly we have a story that would definitely scare the life out of most people and  18-year old Leanne Smith is apparently not any different. The teenage mother was giving her baby a bath when a 5ft python slid out from under it.

Understandably it was a shock to the young woman from Dartford, Kent but she had the presence of mind to get out of the bathroom with her four month old daughter Millie, leaping over the snake in the process.

It was huge and it just sat there hissing and looking at me…I just screamed and screamed, which was probably the wrong thing to do as it started to hiss at me even more. I jumped over it and called the RSPCA. They said it had probably got in through a pipe and was ready to attack me.

The royal python - a non-venomous constrictor that crushes its prey - was caught by a RSPCA officer and a neighbour experienced in looking after large snakes is caring for it while the owner is sought. It is believed the snake may have gotten into the council flat through a pipe.

It would have been more aggressive than usual because it would have been very stressed and afraid, cold, confused, hungry - and more scared of Leanne than she was of it.

Moving on to Tokyo and a middle aged woman cause chaos in a sumo event by invading sacred ground.

The woman ran from the side of the Kokugikan sumo stadium, pushing her way past a security guard and rolling into the ring just as a bout was set to begin. The Japan Sumo Association insisted that though the woman did enter the raised platform around the batting ring, she did not set foot on the ring. Her reasons for the invasion remain unclear but according to Nikkan Sports daily she was carrying a bundle of flyers saying “help, bad spirits”.

The sport’s rules on male only participation are strict, to such an extent that, at a 2001 tournament, a female governor of Osaka had to delegate prize-giving duty to a male subordinate.

As well as sumo wrestling, women were banned from entering mines or climbing mountains in Japan.

And finally we move to Nebraska where a state lawmaker has filed a lawsuit… against God.

Ernie Chambers filed the action against the Almighty - stating that he/she goes by numerous aliases — for causing “fearsome floods, egregious earthquakes, horrendous hurricanes, terrifying tornadoes, pestilential plagues” and other catastrophes.

Chambers vs. God is seeking from the court a “permanent injunction ordering defendant (God) to cease certain harmful activities and the making of terrorist threats” asserting that God is the “admitted perpetrator” of such acts.

Chambers told local media he filed the suit to make a point about frivolous lawsuits frequently seen in US courts, citing a recent one against a judge and has asked the court to award him an unspecified summary judgement against God. If this does not happen then he is seeking a permanent injunction prevent God from engaging in the damaging acts cited in the filing.
