Nothing will change

Do we really think anything will happen to our “beloved” Taoiseach after the Mahon Tribunal questioning?

Listening to the radio on the way home last night the same questions seemed to keep getting asked by the same people who thankfully pushed hard enough for this to be brought to light. If it was 20 years ago I doubt this kind of thing would have been disclosed.

How are we meant to trust our leader who cannot clearly state how large amounts of money were lodge into his bank account? If it were small amounts I could understand it but we’re talking large amounts that would be worth in and around €300,000 today. It’s not something I would easily forget in relation to my salary.

The Dail resumes today and the 14 minutes opposition leaders are said to be allowed to question Mr Ahern will no doubt produce deflected answers and statements like “I disclosed all to the Tribunal”. I’m a cynic at the best of times but to me it just looks like lies and more lies and strained ones at that.

This government comes off with a consistent attitude of scoffing when questioned about anything they may or may not have done. It is frustrating to read, frustrating to see so much arrogance, frustrating that it doesn’t look like there will be any change in the current climate.

It’d be nice to see  politics actually having something to do with political work, but I think we are long past the point of no return in that regard. What’s the worst feeling about all of this? That enough people elected Ahern to continue doing a job that he is marginally able to do. Does it start to smack of George W Bush?
