Trust and Knowledge

by Mike

Imagine getting to know someone, trusting them and possibly believing them to be someone that is capable of earning your trust. We all know someone like that, but what happens when that trust is betrayed?

John Richard Murrell was arrested by officers from the Garda Extradition Unit last Friday, in Athy, after he failed to report to probation hostel in Britain. Mr. Murrell was released in prison in England in September 2000 and was this time arrested in connection with suspected sex offences.

The British police were trying to find the man for a long time and he was featured on a child exploitation most wanted website. The length of time he has been in Ireland has not been revealed.

It just made me think how we may really not know the people that we consider ourselves to be close to. How we put so much faith and trust in them but at the end of it all they are keeping something hidden that would change the nature of our relationship with that person.

In Germany, Bishop Gerhard Ludwig Mueller, of the Bavarian city of Regensburg, had to apologise to his congregation for the reinstatement of a convicted child molester priest. Peter Kramer, a priest in the Bavarian town of Riekofen, was arrested on August 30 on suspicion of sexually abusing a minor.

He was convicted of child molestation in 2000, but following numerous amounts of therapy was given a clean bill of mental health in 2004.

While I do believe people can change and redeem themselves for previous crimes and offences there is always going to be the changes that old wounds and scars will constantly run deep from those victims of that person’s actions.

Yes, there is forgiveness and in the long run I think the hate has to stop in order to move on. However that is an ideal which is not always present in modern times and every situation will be different.

Residents of Riekofen were said to be angry that they were not told about Kramer’s criminal history and you can understand that as we would all like to be in a position to protect our families from harm and the more knowledge we have the better the chance of that happening.
