Give Peace a chance?
Is peace really possible? Can we ever see a time where we can all put down weapons and learn to solve our problems differently?
There are non violent ways to solve just about any problem, but at the same time there is a human trait (I believe) that results in us not wanting to fully see it through. I think there may be a lawless side in us, a burning desire to still have a small amount of hate inside a large amount of love and vice versa.
Peace is possible, everything is possible, but how far are we willing to go. Some wounds will never heal and forgiving someone is an easy thing to say not necessarily to do. I think the majority of us want to be better people and we always want to get on God’s good side, those of us that believe in the existence of an afterlife that is.
I believe that as soon as people want peace in the world they can have it. The trouble is they are not aware they can get it.
John Lennon
If we were put in a situation where to obtain peace we would have to shake our enemy’s hand, would we do it? If you came face to face with someone that had murdered a loved one, would you be able to look him/her in the eye and be prepared to forgive? It is a very tough thing to even comprehend let alone be put in the position and I admire anyone who would be willing to do it.
We hear that we cannot love others if we do not “love ourselves” and I do believe that to be true, we have to have some confidence in silencing our demons and find a way to obtain peace from within because that is the only way a person can help pass along the idea to others.
I admire John Lennon’s sentiments but even back in the 1970’s peace was a long way off, maybe people cared more about having it but still. Today it just seems like it’s even further away then before, there are some good signs ; Northern Ireland and possibly Korea being two of them. At the same we run into the age old problems of using force when our minds can provide a better solution.
When people in war torn countries see their houses destroyed and their families torn apart are they really thinking of peace and forgiveness? I doubt it, we have a void in ourselves that needs to get some sense of justice, sometimes what our perception of justice may seem to be is the total opposite of other’s.
Give Peace a Chance? I would like to think we could, I hope we can.
