Let’s Stay Together?

by Mike

Do we really stay in relationships that have their tough times because we hope that it will get better if we work through problems or that we are resigned to not being able to find anything else?

Those that are in the limelight sometimes stay together simply because being together is a better image then being apart. Having never been married but been in a number of serious relationships I know how hard it can be to make it work. I also know that sometimes a couple can be kidding themselves by trying to paper over the cracks just to prove to the outside world that everything is ok. A case of point may be Hilary and Bill Clinton.

I know the truth of my life and of my marriage, my relationship and partnership, my deep abiding friendship with my husband…Now obviously, we’ve had challenges as everybody in the world knows — but I never doubted that it was a marriage worth investing in even in the midst of those challenges

Hilary Clinton, from an interview with Essence magazine

To find out your partner has cheated on you on a number of occasions cannot be easy for anyone. To find out this through stories in the media and then have to come out and talk to the world when it seems like there are a million cameras on you must be excruciating.

Bill Clinton, in the 1990’s, was arguably the most powerful man in the world. Unlike most Presidents he had charm, charisma and looks not seen since John F Kennedy which meant that he would immediately attract many women. Offer any man that kind of power and they would probably rip your hands off as they take it, but when does someone like Mr. Clinton stop being all powerful and righteous President and just be a mere mortal. We all make mistakes right?

I’m not defending his actions but I can understand them at the same time. Fame and power turns people and it changes their outlook. I wonder had Hilary Clinton not decided to run for the Senate or the Presidency, would we be speaking about the Clinton’s divorce?

Perhaps this is the way that Mrs. Clinton gets back at Bill by making sure he is supporting her ambition and being seen to do so can attract a lot more votes and respect then if it were the “ex-wife of President Clinton”.

I could be the world’s biggest cynic for saying all of this, but I think things like this can exist on smaller scales. Some people stay together in marriages for reasons other then love. When it is for their children you can understand it and in most cases I applaud it because the majority of the time it is better for a child to have both of his/her parents around them as they grow.

Other cases of violence and abuse can mean that the damage done to a family can be far worse if they stay together.
