Their own little paradise
It is easy to say what we want but is it just as easy to stick by our words when people come into criticise us? Some of flip flop so much on positions that we forget what we were talking about in the first place.
I know I’ve probably done it and not even realise that I’ve done it and most of the time it is to done by us to keep others happy, even if that hurts us or our views in the process. However my gripe is more with the government and two pieces of recent legislation that have shown them up as not only being arrogant but so out of touch that it is untrue.
I really do wonder sometimes if they believe that they can build a little paradise for themselves and that the rest of us can live off whatever scraps they decide to give us out of the kindness of their hearts (I’m sure there is a heartbeat there somewhere)
A massive pay rise was announced for the Taoiseach and the Ministers. Where any of us shocked that they would received an extra €38,000 and €25,000 per year respectively? Where any of us even more shocked to find that they were in full agreement as to the recommendations and fully intended to pass this legislation.
It cannot be easy being Bertie Ahern. The leader of the country resembles Mayor Quimby, from the Simpson’s, more and more every day (and I’m not just talking about his looks) but to compensate for that he is now paid more then Gordon Brown and George W Bush. Add the rigours of the Tribunal and it is easy to see how this country is being dragged down.
To be honest about it, yes people have said to me that the size of the increases appears to ordinary people to be unjustified.
Willie O’Dea, The Minister for Defence,
So the slightest bit of negative reaction to a matter that would be taken as trivial, had this elected party been doing their jobs, and the government decides to retreat and ‘thrash” out the matter amongst themselves. Well that’s worked so well before, I really do not know why I was worried.
We have the same problem with provisional licences. The Government got tough and announced that the Gardai would take action against those drivers without the proper licence to drive, but then the Noel Dempsey tried to appease the backlash. He first said the Gardai would be lenient, which the Gardai denied, and then the ruling would be deferred until June 2008.
Brilliant Mr Dempsey! Why could you not have announced that in the first place? Giving people four or five days to change or face the consequences after letting us all run rough-shot for so long was always going to be a crazy idea and more over it is so naïve that is nearly untrue.
I honestly do not know what is worse; the government for what little they do and the huge fuss they make over their minor achievements or the children of the old Fianna Fail voters who take little or no interest in politics so they just vote for whoever “Mum and Dad” did.
Ignorance is bliss? Yeah right.
