Some children are spoiled and it is not their fault, it is their parents. - Roald Dahl

I like to have a choice on how I get to work every morning. I do not think it’s too much to ask. Apparently Dublin Bus do. There is a bus service called Morton’s, or the Circle Line as it is better known, running from Celbridge and although it is a little bit more expensive it is a more comfortable journey and helps those who work in Nutgrove get to work quicker and easier.

Apparently this did not sit well with some people because the night service that Circle Line employed to take people to and from Celbridge was forced to stop in August. So the last Circle Line bus leaving Celbridge is now at 5.15pm, with the last bus back to Celbridge at 7.15pm.  Is competition not meant to be a good thing? Obviously not.

In every other industry competition helps to set standards and to try and be the best. If you’re the only act in town it is going to be very hard to get out of bed in the morning and motivate yourself into hitting higher levels every day. Complacency is an easy trap to fall into and it’s a nice warm safe place when you do fall because you ignore everything else around you.

Also when does it become “our fault” and not “their fault”. I’m quick to blame the government for most things, and most of the time they should be blamed for the way this country is run, but surely it comes to a stage where enough is enough in terms of what some unions get away with. We have read about instances in Aer Lingus where it is difficult getting them to the table just to talk about having discussions .

In sporting terms some of you will have read how the England football team’s failure to qualify for Euro 2008 by the own performances is not their fault but  instead there are too many foreign players in the English Premiership. So instead of seeing it as a challenge English players and some in the media are claiming that you  turn the league into a false economy. If the talented foreign players are no longer there then the standard of the league will reduce and will the “winners” of the domestic trophies still be competing in the best league in the world?

The same applies to Aer Lingus. Competition from Ryanair, British Midland, Virgin etc has to be a good thing. They have to make money so therefore efficiency should aim to be at a maximum. So why should Dublin Bus workers be any different.

In any other walk of life if you do not perform in your job you will lose it. It’s a simple equation but Dublin Bus is like a spoilt child. The parent(the government) has let the child have its way for so long and then one day decides when the child has become a teenager that the time to “parent” is now. The child will rebel, it’s a “no brainer”. Most importantly the child will not have any respect for the parent and thus it is a near impossible task to keep them under control.
