Christmas is a time for…

by Mike

For one day in the year we go crazy and act like it is the end of the world.  We stalk shops and supermarkets buying a lot of food and gifts for people, most of the time, we would not invite into our homes at any other time of the year. I am of course talking about Christmas.

There is the huge religious outlook on Christmas Day and in some families mass attendance in and around the festive season is compulsory. However for others it is a season to spend the time in the most stressful of circumstances and I can only feel sympathy for those people who are not where they really want to be this Christmas.

I know of a few people who were considering breaking up with their partners because they couldn’t go on in the relationship only to convince themselves that they could not tell them about it because  “I can’t break up with someone, it’s Christmas.” Sometimes all the frustration boils over and things can come to a head at a time were we go from not dealing with many people in our families to having them literally in our face for any length of time.

While I’m sure everyone would like to have a Christmas like the ones we see on television, reality is usually a different prospect altogether. The stresses and strains seem to begin earlier, Christmas seems to being earlier. Many will have noticed in many supermarkets how products and advertisements for Halloween were placed right beside that of items for Christmas. The season barely finishes and the madness all starts again.

Then comes paying for it. I have heard stories of people struggling to pay off the previous years Christmas credit card debt before having to plunge themselves into the next year because they need to keep up and buy their children the latest of everything. It’s a terrible trap to fall into and one that can take a very long time to get out of.

There is far too much suffering, in various guises, during this period. I would love to say there is a solution  or at least an easy one but I cannot. Christmas is a time for a lot of things, bringing people together, celebrating life but as much as it can bring people together it can also tear others apart and bring back memories that quite simply people just want to remain buried.
