The art of teaching is the art of assisting in discovery. - Author Unknown
I never understand how there are certain jobs where you can untouchable. Teaching seems to me to be one of those positions.
The old adage “Those that can, teach” is true and I think it is unfortunate that there are quality teachers who feel they are no longer up to the job because of the stresses that comes with it. I can remember one particular teacher of mine who teaching ability was second to known, the only problem they had was they could not control the rowdiness in the class.
Now some may say that the ability to teach should include being able to control a class full of people, but at the end of the day is it not a case of only being able to educate those who are willing to receive it?
Teachers should be considered amongst any other profession and in the majority of professions there are people that are suited for the job and those who are not. What seems to be apparent is that those who are not suited for the role remain in the position regardless of the results or their abilities.
In any of the jobs I have had, I have been constantly be evaluated as to my abilities in the role I have been given. If there is no motivation to work in the role, surely complacency will creep in and if that becomes a reality neither the teacher nor the students will gain any benefit from teaching.
I think it is unfortunate that education is a memory exercise. We are geared to remembering exactly what is going to be on the exams rather then learning properly. Open minds are always needed when it comes to education, not closed ones. If we are only told we are being taught the standard needed to pass an exam, it is robotic. It also may go some way to explaining why there seems to be more and more people leaving school and not having an idea of what career path they wish to take.
Not all teachers are bad, I can credit many teachers for encouraging me to seek out more information and to delve deeper in the subjects I am interested in. There were others that just wanted to get through the day and that is their choice. It is unfortunate that they are cheating themselves and their students.
A good education is a rare thing; however it should be made available to all.

Many professions have this difficulty - some more pronounced than teachers in my experience. One category where we do see people remain in their position regardless of the results of their work or their abilities is the lay professional Church bureaucrat & liturgist. Considering the results of their work since the 1970’s we should have let many go long ago.
Comparing the results of (secular) education in the country since 1970 to that of the lay Church bureaucrat and liturgist since 1970 is revealing. The nation is well educated today but the liturgy is in disarray.
