The Lighter Side
To the lighter side we go once more in order to finish off the week on a slightly happier note.
Firstly we go to America and to the 11th annual Wacky Warning Label contest, organised by the Michigan Lawsuit Abuse Watch. The contest highlights the effects of lawsuits on product warning labels.
The first prize of $500 went to Kevin Soave for submitting the health warning label that stated “If you don’t breathe you’ll end up quickly dead”.
Second place went to the label on a t-shirt that says “Don not iron while wearing shirt”, while the third prize was given for a buggy featuring a storage pouch that warns “Do not put child in bag”.
While the contest was meant to be taken as a light hearted matter, a group of American trial lawyers stated that warning labels can save lives and called the contest “shameful”.
Moving on to New Zealand, and a 24 year old man was fined for slapping two New Zealand police officers on their backsides.
Jonathan Berry was arrested by the officers in question as he tried to flee, his behaviour was said to have been drunken. Unfortunately the authorities did not see the funny side of it and a Christchurch Court Judge agreed to discharge Berry without a conviction on condition he pay 500 Austrailian dollars to a charity selected by police.
And finally we move to Latvia and it was looking like it was going to be a slightly cheaper Christmas for the Latvia citizens as the authorities gave them permission to cut down their own tree.
However it has emerged that rangers in charge of forests around Riga had been struggling to keep people away to protect the few fir trees that grow around there.
The Riga forestry agency revealed that a state body had invited residents to cut their trees from forests located 30 miles or more outside the capital, but the public decided to go to the protected areas instead.
