Good Time Gone Bad
Some lads on a night out, a few drinks are consumed, there is a bit of banter, they meet some girls and before you know it things get out of hand and someone is being accused of rape.
While all of that may seem far fetched and the story is about the Manchester United Christmas party, I think it is something that can easily happen on any particular night out in any particular city.
Apparently Police were called to the Great John Street Hotel early on Tuesday after reports that a 26 year old woman had been raped. Jonny Evans, a Manchester United and Northern Ireland player, has been bailed after being arrested by police in the enquiries.
I understand that there is an atmosphere on nights out, especially around this time of year when it is a free-for-all in terms of parties but two things have come from this incident that seem to raise a worrying trend.
For starters it could easily be the case that Mr Evans tried to use his “star” power in order to attract this girl and thus believed he could do whatever he wanted. The other possibility is that the girl is making up the story of rape due to the fact that it involves a Manchester United “star”.
I can only imagine that rape is a terrible thing to have to go through. There so much physical and emotional damage after the event, that has to be worked through that sometimes people never fully recover.
What would annoy me the most however is if this claim is being made up, because it cheapens every other possible rape case and the validity of them. Cases that should be prosecuted may be rejected because the authorities begin to believe that the victim is just “making things up”. It does amaze me how a small amount of people’s selfishness can ruin it for others.
If Mr Evans is guilty, then by all means throw the book at him. There should be no place for rapists in modern society and they should be given the necessary treatment and rehabilitation needed to work through there problems, be they medical or physical.
I just hope that a swift resolution can be found in this case, if it can not then it drags a painful set of circumstances through the mud and the public eye and there is no way to tell how much damage that will do.
