The hurt continues
The years of waiting, the agony and the frustration of hoping that some form of closure can be put to rest came down to the result of a court case today. Unfortunately for the families of victims of the Omagh bombing there was no such resolution as a court cleared Sean Hoey of murdering 29 people in 1998.
Hoey had denied a total of 56 charges relating to a car bomb that exploded on the busy high street of the market town of Omagh. My focus is not on Hoey but more on the families affected. Maybe they were not seeking their “pound of flesh” as such but I am sure they were looking to put some of the misery they have to go through over the past nine years to rest.
I would imagine that tonight old memories are being stirred and it may become harder for the families to come to terms with no one being held accountable for the tragedy, rather then the loss of the loved ones.
Unsafe conviction rulings will have done nothing to appease those seeking justice for those who cannot defend themselves. I would imagine that it was 56 days of sheer torture with the only light at the end of the tunnel being a conviction of guilty. Unfortunately that has not turned out to be the case and many will speculate the reasons why, but regardless of this the hurt will always be there.

Ann Says:
My heart goes out to the families at this time, and yet I know if I were to meet them I’d not know of anything to say that could console.
Within my heart though I carry an absolute certainty of the existence of a Supreme Judge and a Higher Court where one day the guilty will be summoned and justice will be meted out.
The sense of outrage and frustration that came to a head yesterday has been well covered in today’s papers - this at least is something positive being done by way of supporting the families in the Christmas season as they struggle with unimaginable grief.
Clearly, as Mike says, the hurt will always be there.
