For the Land of the Free…

by Mike

America is always the country that the majority of us look to in order to be influenced, to be entertained and to feel a sense of strong determination and see a go-getting mentality.

2008 will be the last year of the George W. Bush’s term of office, thankfully some would say. I think we choose our political leaders to be the people that we would like to be. I rephrase that, I think we used to choose political leaders for those reasons. With the recent upheavals of many countries and dictatorships alive and well and basic human rights constantly being restricted; I think that is changing.

However it is always America that the world looks too, as their elections are always the most high profile of any other. The race has started already and as polls in Iowa have shown there are no certainties this time.

I admire Barack Obama, I think he handles himself well, is obviously very intelligent and I think would make a great candidate to be President of The United States. The main problem I can see for him is not that or inexperience but of plain old racism.

I would love to see a world, but in this case I’ll take America, where people can be judge for what they are and not the colour of their skin and what they look like. That above anything else I believe is something that will go against both Obama and Hilary Clinton.

Mrs Clinton is a strong female, something that is always a challenge to men everywhere, mainly because we do not know how to handle that. Unfortunately there are places in the America with deep rooted views as to how America should be and I think those views would not include having an African American or Female President.

Mrs Clinton does not have the same charisma as her husband; she doesn’t appear to make people feel as at ease as Bill did. One could argue that was all Mr Clinton could do because his policies were never amounting to much and his indiscretions were always headline news.

Barack Obama has got a massive influential plus on his side with the support of Oprah Winfrey. All of a sudden the “Oprah Effect” can open up a brand new audience of voters to Obama and possibly swing the election for him. When you’ve got the most powerful woman in television backing you it can only be a good thing right?

It’s all about the spin, I would love to say it is not but it’s true. The campaigns will roll out and things may get dirty. One thing is for sure that whoever takes over the mantle will have to address the fears that the American public have about the economy and the war in Iraq. It needs a strong leader; let’s hope they choose the right one.

I agree with a lot of what you said about Ms Clinton and Barrack Obama, but I was insulted by your comment about President Bush. As far as I am concerned he is a good christian man and is made fun of by people who don’t know him and hate him because he stands up for Christian beliefs. Looking back at history he will be remembered as one of the great Presidents. One thing you must remember is that a President does not pass the laws but congress does and Congress did not have enough republicans to pass the laws they wanted. The democrats blocked them. The economy is fine here except for our debts which were brought to pass by past Presidents. I do not think the Republicans will get in this next time because people like me who are Republicans will not vote just to get them in but someone who is knowledgeable and right now the only one close to that is Romney and Hillary just wants to be the First Woman president and Obama is good but not enough experience to run this Country and to deal with other countries in crisis. Maybe in another four to eight years will Obama be ready, so Hillary is IT! Along with Bill to help her run things.

I must have made a mistake and come across the wrong website, because I was under the impression that this was a CATHOLIC blog.
Since when do catholics in ireland not care about abortion?
    do you not myfriend mike?
do you know how many abortions there are annually in the US?
Do you know what barack obama and hilarys postions are on abortion?
I’ll tell you : they are both strongly in favour of it?
before you post blogs in favour of either of these candidates again ( which you are of course entitled to do of course) I strongly advise you ( presuming you consider yourself a faithful catholic, and if not you can just ignore this whole post) to read the statement of the US bishops on priorities american voters must make when going to the polls:
    here it is http://www.usccb.org/faithfulcitizenship/FCStatement.pdf

Matthew,I specifically did not bring up abortion because I didn’t believe that it should be part of the blog.

Any discussion of it is generally a taboo subject, in politics even more so, and this article made no reference to the religious beliefs of the candidate (overall i’m too concerned about their preference as at the end of the day it is their choice and also the voters choice as to who will be voted as President of The United States)

Audrey, my comment in relation to George W Bush, stated the following “2008 will be the last year of the George W. Bush’s term of office, thankfully some would say.” Nowhere in that statement was a personal criticism or attack on President Bush or his religious beliefs, but as you are well aware many have commented on his term of office.

I appreciate both your comments, without being in full agreement with them but isn’t that what opinion is all about?!
