Alternative ways to pass on faith

by Ronan

In my article ‘Motu Proprio’ an interesting comment on the need for a move of religious instruction from schools (where problems are now clear) towards alternative means: Sunday schools, discussion groups etc. This is worth bringing back up for discussion.

I think the problem is that by realising the place of the faithful as the church it could be expected that the faithful would take on the role. The all too swift pounce of the celtic tiger meant that secularisation changed realities. Now ‘the faithful’ are happy to ignore ‘their’ faith. One could be forgiven for imagining that if the faithful were once again given a back seat they would be quick to protest.
The post-post Vatican II generation are hungry for spiritual nourishment which their parents weren’t overly eager to impart. Now is the perfect time to set up discussion groups and sunday schools. Restlessness at a lack of debate cannot be too far away.

Ronan, I would be in favour of Sunday school or discussion groups etc; - any and all means that will result in the raising of young Catholics who are as knowledgeable about their faith as they are proud of their Christian heritage.

I would be glad to see RE given its proper place, its own importance, rather than being slotted in between IT and PE or whatever.

I joined the blogging world just over a year ago and since then have been astounded by some of the blogs set uo by young American Catholics, home-schooled and with a knowledge and love of the Church that would put many to shame.

Roll on the day when this will happen here.

By our lives we will teach most. By the love we show others. : “They will know we are Christians by our love.” And it is not just American Catholics, but young folk from every denomination, who have been taught the love of Jesus at home. Blessings from Ireland
