The man who kills the animals today is the man who kills the people who get in his way tomorrow. - Dr. Diane Fossey

Why do we always believe that we have to right to live before anything else?

Animals get for food, for clothing, for many other different purposes but generally the only time we react is when they are slaughtered or killed for sport.

I have to say I’m no different; I’m a semi vegetarian, I don’t eat red meat but I eat chicken and fish. I don’t know why I think that it is less senseless to kill chicken and fish then it is to kill a cow, but it is not something that most stop to think about when the big greasy fry up is being eaten or a massive t-bone steak.

Animal rights activists are up in arms with the recent news that South Africa are to reintroduce the culling of elephants from May 1st this year. The elephant population has grown from 8,000 in 1995, when killing the animals was outlawed, to about 20,000. One would assume the hunters want their ivory.

We always need a bandwagon to jump, a flavour of the month so we can look trendy. Why not this? (And I ask that genuinely) How about we try to educate the masses, by showing them how much cruelty we can bring to animals that do not deserve the barbaric end that they receive.

Some will say it is the law of the jungle and that they will be involved in many battles but when a human being is killed we generally state that it is a crime; it is never considered just the law of the human race and something that “just happens”.

We all have a lot to learn, myself included, about being better people and also about treating others the way we would like to be treated.
