Flying The Flag?

by Mike

If you or I tried to take a break for 20 days, we would not be just allowed to get up and walk away without considering our commitments and responsibilities for the time we were away right?

The Government have closed proceedings at the Dáil  until 2.30pm on Wednesday 2nd April. A nice holiday for some.

Call me a cynic (and I am) but I believe that the amount of money that is spent at this time of year by our Government ministers beggars believe. There is nobody forcing them to put appearances in various parts of the world, but yet because they decide to rent out private jets, limousines and throw the majority of their expenses at the feet of the taxpayer; we are made to sit there and take it.

Someone tell me why? What good does Bertie Ahern, for example, do by flying to Washington with his delegation while crimes will go unsolved and hospital waiting times will remain the same?

Will the average taxpayer accept that part of their money is going towards this decadence? With the knowledge that a late former Taoiseach used money that was not his to fund his lavish lifestyle, should we simply let our current politicians do the same?

Maybe the government believes that by Monday the majority of the public will be in the pubs and clubs of the land (before, during and after the parades) downing one too many pints and singing rebel songs to be bothered by what they do. In some cases they may be right.

Should this not be a case of “put your own house in order”? We should fly the flag, but our government should do it when they have something to proudly boast, not half baked ideas and wasted policies that will never get off the ground, because we are, apparently, “taking the next steps forward.”
