Drinking and Driving: Are we finally getting the message?
A recent survey, by the road safety group PARC, found that 99% of people recently are in favour of a reduction in the current drink driving level. The survey was conducted among 3,262 people in Donegal, Leitrim, Sligo, Dublin, Wicklow, Wexford, and Cork.
While I do agree that we need to take a seriously look at what people are even considering by drinking and driving I would also advise that the way the Gardai conduct their breathalyzer tests has to change.
Most pubs have car parks; no doubt you have seen them or used them. However it always surprises me how many cars are in the car park from when I arrive and when I leave. At the end of the night, do the people who drove to the pub, drive back home again?
I’m firmly of the believe that if one member of the Gardai was stationed outside a pub at closing time it would encourage more people who have been drinking to find other means to get home and thus reduce the risk of any accidents.
Can it be done? If the government is serious about tackling this problem then it can be. Instead of placing dozens of extra Gardai at sporting events, or have them ride alongside government ministers, is there a possibility that they can actually work for the community at large and protect and serve?
Yes, across the board we have a simple lesson that needs to be constantly drummed into us and whether it is Gay Byrne or any of the action groups determined to change our mentality in relation to drinking; we do have to take some responsibility. However it can’t be done alone.
