The Lighter Side

To the lighter side of things we go again and first we start in New York as security is apparently very tight for the visit of Pope Benedict.

Following the Pope’s visit to the United Nations, a beaver was spotted struggling to swim past the world body’s headquarters.

Harbour and Scuba units spotted the four-foot long, 18-kg animal and immediately noticed something was wrong with its movement. Apparently beavers have only recently returned to the city after a 200 year absence.

Lt. John Harkins, commanding officer, NYPD SCUBA, said in a statement that the animal had been tilting unnaturally and showed “laboured breathing.” After securing it in a safety noose the officers pulled it aboard their vessel.

“It has pretty big claws,” Harkins said of the beaver which will be taken to an animal hospital.

Moving on to Italy and an Italian man was given a suspended jail sentence for staring too intensely at a woman sitting in front of him on a train.

The unnamed man, said to be in his 30’s, was sentenced to 10 days in prison and a 40 Euro fine after a 55-year old woman filed a complaint for sexual harassment, following two separate occasions of staring in 2005 on a commuter train going from Lecco, a town in northern Italy, to Milan.

The pair did not speak, however on the first occasion the man sat next to the woman but she felt he had moved too close to her. On the second occasion the man sat in front of the same woman and according to her complaint, stared at her for the whole journey.

The man’s lawyers have stated that they will appeal the decision.
