Mind The Gap
Poverty is obviously is a terribly unfair situation, it is something that has no mercy. With the credit crunches, financial difficulties and general price increases it can be no surprise that more people are struggling to make ends meet.
With this in mind I was interested to read two different stories showing situations at both extremes. The United Nations have recently announced that they are setting up a task force to take the global food crisis, caused by rising prices.
They have stated that they will explore long term and emergency measures and try to find a solution to the rising costs of the basic foods like wheat.
Unfortunately there has always been a massive gap between the have’s and have not’s and, as I have stated in previous blogs, it is something that will not be solved with a simple click of the fingers. Problems that have been created over many years, can take just as long to resolve.
The contrasting story I read today was that of the Oil firms Royal Dutch Shell and BP and their announcement of profits for the first quarter of the year. The price of oil is close to $120 a barrel and, in the first three months of 2008, Shell made profits $7.8bn. BP announced that their profits had risen by 48%, since January, to $6.588bn.
The gap is ever increasing.
