Stop the arrogance and listen

by Mike

I’m probably running the risk of offending many when I discuss this, but I’m sure that I’ve offended many before so I’ll continue!

I’m not the biggest fan of the Irish Government, you may have noticed from my previous blogs, and its handling of the Lisbon Treaty has done nothing to turn the tide as far as I am concerned.

Now before anyone jumps on me for this, I am not going to discuss the rights and wrongs of the Lisbon Treaty, because I simply do not know enough information about it, a category that I believe that many fall into.

No the reason I am writing this is due to the sheer arrogance of a Government who has long preached to be “with the people” and “in touch” with the people. This sheer arrogance has resulted in this Government being forced to retreat and take the cotton buds from their ears and blinkers from their eyes and  start to think “hey, they didn’t follow us blindly, what is wrong?”

The decision this week has shown that Brian Cowen, the Government and the other parties backing the agenda failed. Much like the Government has failed with the health service and it’s attempts to prevent crime, there is usually an excuse ready and waiting in the wings and this time it seems to be that we didn’t listen.

Brian  Cowen took the view that the Irish public were to be treated like mushrooms, kept in the dark and fed rubbish. The “do as we say, don’t do as we do” mentality has long been in existence with Fianna Fáil and maybe the public is starting to wake up to it.

I hope so, but at the same time, maybe the result will turn out to be the wrong decision. Maybe as Leo Varadker of Fine Gael says, the time to sting the Government will be at the next elections. I don’t know, but I hope that Mr Cowen will change his attitude, and facial expression if possible, and wake up to the fact that this Government can no longer afford to live in the Ivory Tower, while the peasants (the public) struggle below.

To bring some religion into this, as I was recently asked where Jesus was in these blogs, Jesus showed the people the way, Jesus advised the people of what was the best road to take…Jesus did not say “just do it”, something that Mr Cowen and Co. should consider.

Actually Our Lord did say “just do it” on a number of occasions and particularly at moments when clarity was in order. St. John VI comes to mind “Unless you eat…..” and in another place we saw some clear “just do it” language in the discourse on baptism.

Jesus did far more than “advise” people - He spoke with authority. His instructions on marriage and divorce come to mind as well. There is so much more that could be discussed.

LOL - do we call the stones Moses brought down the Ten Suggestions?
