“Minor Crimes”
It seems like a bit of no brainer, but if the foundations of a house or building are not solid, then you can’t expect to build properly.
British Police have stated that they wish to focus on “minor crimes” and all that should be said about that is that it is about time.
Regardless of anything else, we all perform better if we have a little bit of fear and most of the time our actions will reflect that. We all have rules to follow and if those rules are not enforced then you have a chaos system where it doesn’t matter what happens, the bad guy will usually win.
Nobody wants to see that…maybe I should rephrase that… nobody “should” want to see that. All of the “I’ve had enough” advertisements and posters around Dublin would make you think that it is the case, but there is still something missing that says to me we do not really comprehend how great the scale is.
In New York, William Bratton decided that the city was a paradise for crime and criminals and decided to start by cracking down on the major crimes and working upwards. Together with former Mayor Rudy Giuliani, they set about successfully turning New York into a safer place and Bratton has been working in Los Angeles since 2002 to try and turn things around there.
I seem to remember before the last election that Michael McDowell briefly mentioned that they wished to work with Bratton to pick up ideas on how to combat crime. Mysteriously all talk of this ceased about five seconds after the election ended.
Across the globe authorities need to wake up and implement measures that can help make us all feel safe. In years to come if we are still crying out “I’ve had enough”, it’ll be too little, too late.
