Some Law and Order…please?

by admin

Willie O’Dea, The Minister for Defence, has stated that there will be no cutbacks, to quote RTE, on “frontline policing to deal with organised and serious crime”. Which is good to know.

However he was not able to confirm as to the growing rumours that Garda force in its entirety would be subject to budget cuts. It is interesting the image that is being portrayed in law enforcement circles and the recent attempted clampdown on public consumption of alcohol.

Have we not heard this before? Had not the Gardai announced that they will enforce the Provisional Licence decree in relation to learner drivers being unaccompanied while driving?

I want things like this to work and so should the entire country, but it doesn’t always happen because in any walk of life and/or profession if you are allowed leeway you will try to obtain more and if those in charge allow you to get away with things, it can be very difficult to assert authority on an uncontrollable situation that has quite simply just gotten out of hand.

I would love to see the Gardai stopping people walking around the City Centre that carry cans and bottles of alcohol. I would like to see there be an end to boarding a bus and wondering if you are safe to go to the top deck and sit near the back, for fear of someone drinking cans of cider, beer etc, as well as smoking and to ask them to stop would be creating a situation where abuse and violence is more then likely.

What some do not see to realise is that the idea of any Police force is to make the public at large feel safer. To do that there has to be strict guidelines which are upheld and in general in this country, those guidelines are not in place.

Hey, if we cannot control our politicians and allow them to venture a guess on the difference between right and wrong, what hope is there for any other organisation?

If this is to be successful, then the right mentality has to be in place. It is so lax in this country that criminals are now celebrities and to be honest, I really don’t care what “Freddie” is doing, whether he is scared or in hiding or protesting to a newspaper about his privacy. Yet every evening his life is splashed across the front of the Evening Herald like we are being informed about the newest reality TV personality.
