Chaos theories tested
Chaos is easily organised, if organised is the right phrase. It can take something small and simple to turn a situation that has people perfectly calm into a scene where those people run around like headless chickens.
I was coming back from Liverpool on Saturday night on the last flight with a well known air carrier (I wasn’t a scraper before you ask!) when it was announced that the flight was delayed by 2 hours. This was after it already having been delayed by an hour.
The thing that gets in me in situations like this is that reassurance can go a long way to alleviate fear. However in this case the announcement was simply that it was delayed and that was it. If someone had come out and said, what I found out from people over here, that there were problems in Dublin Airport, then things might not have looked at bad and then two hours might not have seemed like “two hours”.
The flight eventually took off two hours later then planned, where the pilot informed us as to what was going on. Before that people were angry and to me it shows how tiredness and being kept in the dark can easily set off people.
When we got back to Dublin around 12.30 in the morning, we found that there was a 3-4 hour wait for a taxi. With that in mind, we went up to departures and found a part of the floor to sleep on. I went down to check about 2 hours later to be told it would be 2 hours.
Luckily enough, we knew someone that was in the same situation but their flight was delayed by 4 hours and didn’t get in until 5 in the morning. So what did I find out in 4 and a half hours at Dublin Airport?
Well for one, the role of airport security is to walk up close to a person sleeping and clap to wake you up at ten to four in the morning, that a lot of people working there are never sure what is going on and if they are, do not have a system in place to respond to it.
If this was the first time chaos had been experienced at this airport you’d say ok, but this chaos ensued less then a month ago as well. No one seems to be learning from mistakes and at this stage for the sake of an image, it is about time they should.
From a weather point of you, the housing estate where was staying that night/morning was mostly flooded. Thankfully the house wasn’t damaged, although places were and some of you may have seen the water levels on the 9 o’clock news last night.
Having seen some of the images from severe flooding in other countries, from my point of view, we were lucky. For us it was cleared up in a night but it could have been much worse and I pity anyone who had to go through worse conditions.
