The Lighter Side

Welcome to the Lighter Side, as we go through stories to try and take the seriousness out of the working week.

With over 400,000 volunteers at the Beijing Olympics, singling out one special person can be tough, however Fu Yiquan  might just qualify.

The 103-year-old walks the streets of his hutong neighbourhood three times a day, where he offers help and guidance to tourists and spectators and even helping to clean up the mess afterwards.

“This is what I can do for the Olympics. I can’t go to the stadiums to work, but I can make sure our community is safe and in order,” Fu told the Xinhua news agency.

He turned down an invitation to take part in the Opening Ceremony last Friday stating that he “didn’t want to be any trouble to anyone”.

However in 2001, when it was announced Beijing had won the right to host the Games, the fireworks had the wrong kind of effect on Fu.

“Suddenly the celebrating fireworks broke behind my ears just like a thunder, and my ears felt numb right away.

“Whoever set out the fireworks behind me, they didn’t mean to hurt me, they just wanted to celebrate Beijing’s winning of the right to host the Olympics.”

Moving on and according to hair care specialists Schwarzkopf & Henkel, brunettes have more fun then blondes.

The study of 3,000 women shows that on average brunettes earn €5,000 more than blondes each year.

They are apparently luckier in love too.  Almost half (44%) of those with brown hair (dyed or natural) said the shade gave them the greatest success with the opposite sex - a 10% better hit rate than blondes.
