“Really, beauty is only skin deep”

by admin

I wonder sometimes what we prefer, for things to be sugar coated or for just blunt force in the truth to come out?

As much as we can want people to tell us the truth, sometimes we might not like what it is and react accordingly. With this in mind, I read a story today about the mayor of an small Australian mining town called Mount Isa.

According to BBC News, John Molony told a newspaper last week that “with five blokes to every girl, may I suggest that beauty-disadvantaged women should proceed to Mount Isa”.

According to a survey in 2006, there were only 819 women between 20-24 living in the town out of the total population of 21,421. The town over 1,000 miles away from Brisbane and it might not to much of a shock to hear that Mayor Molony’s comments have come under fire from many people.

In an interview with the Townsville Bulletin last week, Molony came up with a solution for the lack of young females in the town.

“Quite often you will see walking down the street a lass who is not so attractive with a wide smile on her face. Whether it is recollection of something previous or anticipation for the next evening, there is a degree of happiness,” he said.

“Some, in other places in Australia, need to proceed to Mount Isa where happiness awaits. Really, beauty is only skin deep. Isn’t there a fairy tale about an ugly duckling that evolves into a beautiful swan,” he added.

Now in a blunt way, he meant no offence and maybe could have constructed the comments better, but my question is what do we prefer? Sometimes we say “yeah tell me the truth” and then get angry because it wasn’t delivered to us in the way we would like it.

As much as we might not admit it, the majority of are sensitive have feelings and can be hurt easily and that is when diplomacy and tact can come in useful for to those who can be blunt in delivering news.

So while Mayor Molony should not apply for a role in his town’s tourist department, he should work on his approach.
