“Never forget that human dignity is not an expendable commodity but belongs to everyone without exception” Bishop William Murphy (NY-US)
CiNews has reported that abortion will play a bigger part in the forthcoming American election than many had anticipated. Without stating the obvious Church position on the issue (as I have explored in ‘We are talking of peace’), I want to continue with what this topic says of our world today.
The average westerner lives their lives stuck on a rat race of sleep-eat-travel-work-eat-work-travel-eat-sleep. The average westerner sees themselves as ’spiritual’ while not entirely interested in ‘religion’ and they see themselves as caring, searching human beings-which they are. Most change the channel when there’s an emergency appeal on tv and pretend that homeless person isn’t there as they walk past.
This is all normal for the average westerner-not worth mentioning…sadly.
There are thousands, if not millions, of westerners however who struggle to come to terms with the injustice of this world. There are thousands of western Christians, and those of other faiths, who recognise striving for a more just society as their duty as children of God. These are the thousands, if not millions, who march for peace, tell the world the truth about Guantanamo Bay and organise mass events like LiveAid/Live8 to raise funds and spread awareness.
When these things are done the world stands taller and cheers for their seekers of justice. When someone speaks out about abortion society tells us they’re either a religious fanatic, bound by canon law or mad. Why? When someone tries to show the world why it’s wrong they’re accused of attempting to emotionally blackmail or brainwash. How can this be fair? Who decided that this was a no go issue? Who decided that to be pro-life is to be anti-choice?
The article by CiNews talks about partial birth abortions and the protection (or lack of) for those “born alive” after an abortion. When someone tries to explain these things people don’t want to know. I would want to know when such horrific injustices are not only permitted but enshrined as rights in so called “progressive democrocies”.
Just because we close our eyes doesn’t mean the injustices stop. That is a cop-out that is taken by far too many. That is how injustices happen.
