The Lighter Side

To the lighter side we go once again, with some stories to take the seriousness out of the week.

Firstly, those who have always wanted to own their own country can now do so, as Iceland is for sale!

It was offered for sale as a wholesale lot on eBay on Friday. Bidding started at 99 pence but had reached 10 million pounds ($17.28 million) by mid-morning on Friday.

The auction states “Located in the mid-Atlantic ridge in the North Atlantic Ocean, Iceland will provide the winning bidder with — a habitable environment, Icelandic Horses and admittedly a somewhat sketchy financial situation,” Apparently Bjork is not included as part of this package.

Iceland have recently asked Russia for a €4 billion loan to help bail out their banks.

Moving on and a senior official in South Sudan who ordered a crackdown on young women wearing tight trousers has been sacked.

Police arrested scores of women — many on their way home from church — in the capital Juba last week on charges of disturbing the peace. Officers said their choice of clothing proved they belonged to youth gangs.

The authorities took action after Juba county commissioner Albert Pitia Redentore banned any public display of gang behaviour that, he said, threatened traditional values.

However Gender minister Mary Kiden said the crackdown was unconstitutional and it was confirmed on Friday that Redentore was removed from office by President Salva Kiir
