The Lighter Side
Time to go to the Lighter Side once again and take the seriousness out of the week.
Firstly we go to Japan and the city of Kushiro where the local zoo has had problems with their polar bears.
Zoo officials were puzzled by the lack of success in getting two polar bears to mate, only to discover the source of the problem – both are female.
The Zoo swapped an orangutan for a polar bear cub named Tsuyoshi Shinjo, whom they hoped would mate with Kurumi, and last December it reached the reproductive age of four.
Originally officials thought Tsuyoshi might have been too young, but when they saw the two bears urinating in the same way, they believed something was wrong.
The zoo sent some of Tsuyoshi’s hair for a DNA test, the results of which suggested ‘he’ was really a she. It is not an isolated case: Tsuyoshi’s ‘brother’, who was adopted by another zoo and turns three this year, has also turned out to be female.
Moving on to Canada and Obese people have the right to two seats for the price of one on flights within the country, the Supreme Court of Canada has ruled.
The court refused to hear an appeal from the airline, who lost an appeal in May against the decision made by the Canadian Transportation Agency. The decision means that the one-person-one-fare policy will stand.
Air Canada Jazz, Air Canada and WestJet sought for a fresh appeal to be heard but were denied by the high court.
