“If you’re going to panic, panic constructively”
It is amazing to me how the smallest mistake can result in widespread panic.
Sometimes when we do not realise what we are doing the worst things can happen. A case of point would be the recent pork scandal if that’s what it should be called.
From what we are told there were plastics in the pig feed which contained a dioxin known as PCB at levels between 80 and 200 times the safe limits. Almost overnight, supermarkets have removed any trace of Irish Pork products that could be found on their shelves and freezer cabinets and once more it sets the nation in a reasonable state of panic.
They say we are what we eat and we have become more educated as time has passed in relation to foods that are good for us and it is left to our choice as to whether we follow it or not.
Christmas has apparently been saved for consumers producers alike with the news that the Government agreed to set up a contingency fund of €180m and a possible aid package of a further €15 million from the European Union.
Now maybe it is enough to turn us all into vegetarians, in my case I eat very little pork and no red meat, but it does show that food chain of command can be brought to a screeching halt within a moment’s notice.
We rely on the excess we have and are lucky that the recall of pork did not result in a complete lack of available food in this country. Some countries are not so lucky and it is important to remember that.
I know I am critical of the government, but in this case I am not sure that they had any choice and at least (for once) they moved quickly to try and resolve the issue.
