The Lighter Side

by admin

To the lighter side we go, with some stories to take the seriousness out of the week.

Firstly we go to New Zealand and a Co Donegal man has set a new world record for lamb shearing in New Zealand.

Ivan Scott had to shear more than 731 lambs to break the eight-hour strongwool lamb shearing record. According to Radio New Zealand, Scott  sheared a total of 736, while the previous record holder  Justin Bell could only look on.

Moving on and perhaps Dublin County Council could take a leaf out of  the book of Shanghai’s Community leaders.

The Rixin neighbourhood committee in the city’s northeast is behind the campaign to discourage residents’ longstanding habit of wearing pyjamas out of their bedrooms and on the streets.

‘We’re telling people not to wear pyjamas in the street because it looks very uncivilised,’ community official Guo Xilin was quoted as saying.

The habit is said to have emerged over the course of the past 30 years as a sign of prosperity to show that people did not sleep in tattered old clothes.

And finally you’ve heard of the Birdman of Alcatraz, how about the Birdman of Berlin?

After being summoned by complaints over the noise,  Council officials found a 60-year-old man sharing his two-room flat with 1,700 budgerigars.

The pensioner told officials he had adopted two birds because he felt lonely and that nature had done the rest.

About 1,000 of the birds were evacuated on Tuesday, with another 300 on Wednesday, while the remainder were to be taken from the flat to a rescue shelter over the next few days, officials said.
