In these matters the only certainty is that nothing is certain. – Pliny The Elder

Are companies jumping the gun or are they right to make the moves when they do in order to ensure survival?

We seem to be reading more and more about companies cutting jobs or running into administration as the economic crisis rolls on. Dell, in Limerick, has just announced that they will be cutting 1,900 jobs over the course of the next twelve months.

I’m sure it has left a lot of people scratching their heads wondering “why us?” no more so then our world leaders who are finally seeing that things are as bad as they seem.

The other side of the coin is that this is something that maybe we all just have to go through and that instead of taking drastic action, it should be a wave that it ridden out.

But how do you judge it? I think it should definitely be a case of spending more wisely then just about spending more and maybe that will result in less nights out and more conservation of what we have, instead of pure waste which could be afforded during our Celtic Tiger years.

What this all does now is put the more poverty stricken countries to the back burner while we become a bit more selfish. Some would say with justification, because if we cannot provide for ourselves and our own family, how can we begin to provide for those we see on television advertisements and billboards everyday?

Some will take the slow and steady approach while others will want things resolved now.

Either way it is an uncertain period and it’s now time for those we have placed in power to finally start earning their wage.

    Mike,

While I agree with you about not getting ahead of ourselves when it comes to job cuts I really do disagree when it comes to “put(ting) the more poverty stricken countries to the back burner while we become a bit more selfish”. We are selfish enough as it is. I shudder at the thought of a more selfish Ireland.

There are some extraordinary characters working hard in this country for the less fortunate but the prevailing view in the post-celtic tiger days is one of unbridled greed.

Anyway I will write a proper response in a later blog but for now I’ll just say that the weakest amongst us should not be the ones to loose out because of the stupidity of billionaires.

I agree with you Ronan, but you know as well as I do that people can be very insular no matter what and as self preservation they will look to put “their own house in order”, literally, first.

So by that I think there is every chance that the charities will suffer and i think a lot of them have come out and said so recently.
