“We have a secret in our culture, and it’s not that birth is painful. It’s that women are strong.” – Laura Stavoe Harm

What a remarkable miracle that has taken place in California as a woman has given birth to octuplets, only the second to do so in America.

The six boys and two girls are said to be doing well and weigh between 1lb 8oz and 3lb 4oz. Apparently the medical team had scheduled a Caesarean section for seven babies, but doctors were surprised when an eighth came out.

There are some situations that amaze you and take you breath away and this is definitely one of them. I know some of the girls in the office were I work today were trying to comprehend how someone could consider giving birth to just one child.

While not in the same circumstance, Ireland’s most notable version of this is Miriam O’Callaghan who has now given birth to 8 children, separately.

What women have to go through in childbirth is something that I think men take for granted. I don’t think men would cope as well in the circumstances but maybe we would learn to understand women a little bit better then before. Something so fragile and frail is now looking to their parents and in an instant lives will be changed.

I’m sure the mother in this case would not have it any other way.
