False words are not only evil in themselves, but they infect the soul with evil. – Plato
Could you do it? If it came down to protecting your child from prison could you lie for them? That was the dilemma for Janette Mercer.
Ms Mercer’s son, Sean, was recently jailed for life for the murder of the 11 year old Rhys Jones and now she has been charged with perverting the course of justice. She has pleaded guilty at Liverpool Crown Court.
Evidence presented in court showed that Sean Mercer shot Rhys in the car park of the Fir Tree pub, Croxteth,
Liverpool before fleeing on his bike. In subsequent police interviews of which Ms Mercer was present, Sean denied owning a bike.
However, admitted lying to police in a statement she made in September 2007 when she claimed her son only owned one bike and that she had no idea how long he owned it for and had also filed insurance forms to replace the bike.
I realise that parents want the best for their children and also want to protect them and help them grow, but in reality if this dark secret exists, it should be something that eat away at you until you cannot stand the guilt any longer
There are unfortunately many people who have covered for family and friends and know of dark secrets such as this. Can it ever be justified? I do not believe so.
The pain of having to see your child going to prison must be immense and never an easy thing to deal with, but to know that you future could also lie in confinement should make anyone think twice about even considering it.
I would say innocence was lost the day Sean Mercer decided that gang violence and shooting people was the his way his life was going to be. He was no longer his “child” as he was making adult decisions.
Decisions that have cost him a way of life, but maybe it is simply just something he sees as a badge of honour, who knows?
As Janette Mercer, stories have begun to surface about her activities and no doubt there will be more. Sometimes there is nothing you can do for people you care about and love. Sometimes they just have to climb out of the mess they have made.
Janette Mercer may not have believed that and because of it she has been dragged into the pit as well.
