We will only have peace when war is no longer a default solution to conflict.

I hope the events in Antrim last night are not going to be a return to the “bad old days”

Two soldiers died and four other people were injured as the shots were fired at the Army barracks. So far no one has taken responsibility for this and again it is a case of a cowardly attack.

The peace process that took so long to come together has been proven as a success and more sides have come together to say that they prefer it this way and have no desire to go back to times were Northern Ireland hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons.

The days when we expected to read of murders and beatings and terrorist attacks in Northern Ireland should not be allowed to come back. There can be no sense of fondness or nostalgia, especially when people’s lives are at stake.

I am sure there are those that harbour a desire and a hunger for war and violence and if they are not in combat they are not living and breathing. Maybe for those the fight will never end and the hatred can never end.  In general though I believe no one needs those days to return, loss, depression, letting the enemy win; all of the above cannot be allowed to happen again.

Let’s pray that peace can continue, we all need the peace to continue and to hope that this is not the start of a long dark road.
