“To make a point, is to be blunt, which is pointless.” – Bob McMahon

I have often stated I do not understand our Government and their decisions and after this week I am wondering if we have a dictatorship more so then a government.

Now I would not be interested in seeing a portrait of Brian Cowen anywhere, so to have heard that someone snuck paintings of our Taoiseach into two galleries had me surprised but at the same time not disturbed.

But then the Government seemed to want revenge against those who they believe created the “embarrassment”, because, according to those at Today FM “the powers that be want action taken”.

We are in one of the worst financial situations in a long time for this country, jobs are being lost, the health service is not getting any better and crime is getting worse and yet Government press secretary Eoghan O’Neachtain chooses this as his moment to come out and fight.

If they had put so much effort in hunting down criminals, maybe we would have less fear and problems on the street. They could have laughed this incident off, could have called the artist’s bluff on it and said something along the lines of “it’s obviously not a representation of Brian Cowen” but  they didn’t.

The Government continue to show how out of touch they are and the fact is that before they reacted this was not much of a story. If I were the subject of these paintings, I would dismiss, mainly because I would wonder why someone would want to have an image of me sans clothes in the first place.

It is not a photograph, so therefore it is a not a true likeness. If we are going by the logic of complaining about cartoon images, why not take out injunctions on the Irish Times for their daily cartoon , the majority of which have their finger on the pulse of Irish Politics.

This is a waste of time and effort and the actions of our representatives do nothing to help to increase the level of trust that we could have in them.

By the way, the three charges that the Gardaí are meant to be basing this investigation on are incitement to hatred, indecency and criminal damage – for hammering a nail into the wall of the National Gallery.

This Government has been guilty of incitement for hatred for a long time now.
