“Hope has two beautiful daughters. Their names are anger and courage; anger at the way things are, and courage to see that they do not remain the way they are.” St Augustine

Today’s ‘Irish Times’ helped unveil the government’s planned strategy to eliminate long term homelessness while recognising the continuing funding freeze for homeless services. Last year €33 million was spent on homeless services….there’s no dent in the problem yet!
The cost of bread is up 20% on last year, flour is up 42%, milk is up 31%…..while [...]

“Qui cantat, bis orat”- He who sings, prays twice!

Monday, August 18th, 2008

In ‘A Confident & Vibrant Church’ I wrote about what my experience at WYD 35 in Sydney says to me of the state of the catholic Church. As the title suggests the news was good.
Last weekend I explored the Irish Church’s version of a youth event, Youth 2000’s festival at Clonmacnois. What does this experience have [...]

“The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts”

Monday, August 18th, 2008

Unity, not uniformity!

What does it mean to be “One Catholic and Apostolic Church”? In particular, what does it mean to be ‘One’?
As one universal community of faith, members of the Catholic Church share a belief in certain tenets of the faith. These include everything in the Nicean Creed along with any dogmatic pronouncements such as [...]

A Confident & Vibrant Church of Life

Monday, August 11th, 2008

I’ve been reading again and ’Michael G’ has pointed out, in Fr. Bernard’s ‘Take a bow, Irish bishops!’ , that the Irish Church is no longer the Church Militant but is what he calls “the Church Slightly Embarrassed and Apologetic About Not Being Cool and We’re Not Really Different From Anyone Else Except in Emphasis”. Alternative ways to pass on faith

Saturday, January 26th, 2008

In my article ‘Motu Proprio’ an interesting comment on the need for a move of religious instruction from schools (where problems are now clear) towards alternative means: Sunday schools, discussion groups etc. This is worth bringing back up for discussion.

In dying we’re born

Wednesday, September 12th, 2007

Quo Vadis?

Sunday, August 19th, 2007

Speaking in Milwaukee on August 17th the Primate of All Ireland, Sean Brady, spoke of the “smaller but more authentic Church” he sees for the Ireland of tomorrow.  While expressing his worries about the “shift to superficiality in Irish culture” the Archbishop seemed enthuased after recent trends show a revival in spiritual awareness amongst the Irish. So….we can [...]
