I am not the biggest fan of Peter Mandelson but to throw green custard over the man is an absolutely stupid act.

Protest is a basic right. Non physical and peaceful protest should be essential for anyone trying to make their. To me though someone loses credibility for the issue they wish to highlight when things turn violent.

One could maybe say security was lax but Lord Mandelson, as he is now better known as, was right to turn away like he did. It could have easily been something hot, acidic easily something that could have done some serious damage to have.

I understand people are more anxious and angry about current situations financially and also with the environment, but tell me what this does for the Plane Stupid campaign?

The activists launched a series of high profile stunts in recent years against the British Government’s environmental policies. Leila Dean committed the act on this occasion and was arrested and subsequently bailed.

Martin Luther King showed people to way to protest and though it unfortunately cost him his life, the message was spread far and wide. Those with power expect protest in violent form because it connects with the basic animal instinct to react. What is meant to separate us from animals is that we can think, usually, clearly and come up with different ways to react to different situations.

This will be a distant memory soon, it may have made people briefly take notice of Ms Dean, but again I do not understand what she expected to achieve by it. Decisions will not be reversed based on this action.

I hope the events in Antrim last night are not going to be a return to the “bad old days”

Two soldiers died and four other people were injured as the shots were fired at the Army barracks. So far no one has taken responsibility for this and again it is a case of a cowardly attack.

The peace process that took so long to come together has been proven as a success and more sides have come together to say that they prefer it this way and have no desire to go back to times were Northern Ireland hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons.

The days when we expected to read of murders and beatings and terrorist attacks in Northern Ireland should not be allowed to come back. There can be no sense of fondness or nostalgia, especially when people’s lives are at stake.

I am sure there are those that harbour a desire and a hunger for war and violence and if they are not in combat they are not living and breathing. Maybe for those the fight will never end and the hatred can never end. In general though I believe no one needs those days to return, loss, depression, letting the enemy win; all of the above cannot be allowed to happen again.

Let’s pray that peace can continue, we all need the peace to continue and to hope that this is not the start of a long dark road.

Sometimes we find it difficult to walk away from the fight, from work, from ourselves, from life. The hardest thing to do is to admit to yourself that you can no longer go on, no matter what the incentive.

Just over two weeks ago, Joe Calzaghe defeated Roy Jones Jr. Calzaghe had previously hinted that he would retire after that feet and now appears to be at a crossroad. After 46 wins, 32 of them knockouts, there is the temptation for Calzaghe to fight once again with another “last fight” rumoured to happen in his home town of Cardiff in front of 70,000 people.

It made me wonder why is it so hard to walk away. I’m sure there is the amazing high of performing in front of thousands attending the fights and millions watching, but would the constant punches and physical toll that is taken on the body and the brain as well as the mental toll taken on his family, not be enough for Calzaghe to step back and live off memories and the money from a fantastic career?

The fame, the fortune, the glamour it can all be too difficult to walk away from. Muhammad Ali has suffered for going on too long. Many sportsmen are living in pain because they just didn’t know when to call it quits.

I think they miss the excitement, maybe they feel that there is nothing outside of the sporting world they have starred in for so long. Lennox Lewis has recently said that he would climb back into the ring for $100 million.

There is something that drives us, something that makes us want to prove that we can do the impossible, that no matter what is thrown at us; we will come through it. In the mind some people can, in the body it can be different.

It is very rare to find people that can do things in exactly the same way they did in younger years. In theory we learn, we adapt. In theory we show that we have matured and take slightly more time to think before we act.

In Joe Calazaghe’s case, I hope he does retire. He is a great fighter that should be remembered as just that. Those that go on too long run the risk of being remembered as shadows of their former selves.

Several recent news reports here in Ireland have been focusing on Cardinal Sean Brady’s ultimatum to Irish government. The planned Civil Partnership Bill proposes to make changes in order to offer better (mainly financial) protection to same-sex and cohabiting couples.

The Cardinal criticised the Bill, arguing that it undermined Marriage as upheld in the Constitution, by offering it to same-sex couples in all but name. Cardinal Brady has faced a torrent of feedback to his ultimatum from various sources, his actions being viewed by most media-commentators as non-progressive.

With Obama’s US victory, it would seem that Catholics could be forced into embracing an era of secular theism. Is this possible for a Catholic? Will resistance to changes such as the Civil Partnership Bill further the divide that seems to be growing between the Church and the youth?

I met someone who I don’t know very well, but deeply respect, the other night. He is a committed Christian, and joyfully told me that he was just a few weeks married. On his arm was his wife of six weeks. I’m not sure of his age, but I’d say he’s touching forty, though he looks younger. “It was worth the wait,” he whispered to me.

As he and his wife sat together during the meeting we were both attending, I sensed the glow of love between them – the gentle marvel and quiet joy of a couple brought together by God, who waited for the right moment, the right person and kept themselves in anticipation.

And the chemistry is almost tangible.

I’ve only experienced it a couple of times before, and it is always with people who haven’t lived together before they marry, who wait.

And I believe the chemistry lasts a lifetime because it is planted and nourished by God who is Love.

How much would it take to “lose it”? How much would it take to have a moment of madness and as they say “snap” and do something that was totally irrational and against our nature. That was my thought when I read the story of Joanne Hill.

Mrs Hill from Connah’s Quay in Flintshire, was jailed at Chester Crown Court last week for killing four-year-old Naomi, who had mild cerebral palsy. She was given a life sentence.

From the accounts given she held her daughter under the water for up to 10 minutes. While the pictures of the sweet innocent girl and the mother who looks distant and not aware of her surroundings can tell a huge story, it is still something of a shock to believe that it could happen.

By nature mothers are meant to be nurturing , the carers, the providers and most importantly the one a child would trust the most. I’m sure having to bring up a child with any kind of cerebral palsy is difficult and should not be underestimated but it would take a complete change in attitude to turn on the on the child and drown them.

We are fragile at times and can be asked to take so much mentally and physically that we can wear ourselves out and become distant and go inward, which is probably how depression starts.

We have so many qualities that we know of ourselves and so much more that we continue to discover. Not all of it is positive as there is no such thing as perfection, because there would be an argument as to what that was.

Naomi’s father Simon Hill stated that “The fact that Naomi has been taken away from us at such a young age and in such a terrible way is something we will never come to terms with.”

To have any other reaction at that stage would be out of the ordinary. He has called his wife “evil” and I’m sure in that position we would lash out. Some are genuinely evil, who have no remorse for the things they do and the people they hurt.

There are others who are in mental anguish and suffering and cannot distinguish themselves from those who are evil. They need help, like any one of us, they need to know that they have done wrong as well.

That poor little girl dying was a waste of a life, one hopes we can all learn from this incident.

It seems like America is hurt, the public have been subject to financial woes over the last few years and now with the rescue package to “bail out” Wall Street failing spectacularly, one must wonder what is next.

With the word recession flying around everywhere, fear is starting to grip everything. Maybe it will take time to fully sink in, but when the next bills arrive and Christmas hits, there is always a chance that the money will not be there and will also not be able to be borrowed. Worrying times all around really.

It seems crazy when there are so many, sometimes known as fat cats, that seem to decide it would be a great time to take huge payoffs and bonuses which will at some stage be paid by the tax payers. It sounds like great fun?

We all seem to be on high alert for just about everything. We all might start helping the environment purely out of a need to save money and it will more then likely have little to do with a carbon footprint.

One has to hope that the US Government can sort something out. Maybe they will not have the confidence of the public at large, but it has to change sometime.
